Rosie Perez
Rosie Perez was the daughter of Lydia Perez, a merchant marine, and Ismael Serano. She was born in Bushwick Brooklyn, New York City. Rosie is Puerto Rican. Rosie was educated at Grover Cleveland High School, Ridgewood, Queens, New York. She later enrolled at Los Angeles City College, Los Angeles, California. Rosie Perez, who was in her sophomore year of college she was planning to relocate back to New York. Her friends had brought her a going-away party. When Spike Lee proposed that she work in his film Do the Right Thing (1989), she accepted. This was her first big acting job. In Peter Weir's Fearless (1993), she played the part of Carla Rodrigo, for which she was nominated for an Academy Award for Best Supporting Artistess. (She lost to Anna Paquin for The Piano (1993). The most criticism I received early in my career came coming from the Latin community. I can remember being taken out for lunch and saying to me "Can you attend lessons to help you tone down the accent?" Or, "When it's a talk show, how do you not be so funny? Many people gave me crap about my voice, and I tried. My voice was something I couldn't bear to change. As I grew older my octaves slowed down thanks to God. Boxing is about fighting your fears. It's about being confident. Floyd Mayweather could get punched in a straight shot down the middle of his face and he'd never flinch. And I know what he is doing. (Who has mentioned Don Cornelius's fascination with her dancing] Don Cornelius was not interested in watching me dance. I was dancing hip-hop, which was an entirely different style from Californians. They were accustomed to popping and locking, and so hip-hop dancing was not something they wanted to learn. Don was as if, "No, no, no. You're an attractive girl." I was like, "What? This is really bizarre. Then I was required to dance in high heels, and I have never danced in high heels before, and I was wearing this little tiny short dress and it's getting up my thigh and I'm like, Oh my God!
