Alexandra Rose Raisman Bio

Alexandra Rose Raisman was born May 25, 1994. She is a retired American artistic gymnast. She was the captain of the 2012 "Fierce Five" as well as the"Fierce Five" in 2016 "Final Five," U.S. women’s Olympic gymnastics team. At the 2016 Olympics in Rio de Janeiro, she received a gold medal at the team competition as well as her teammate Gabby Douglas the sole Americans who have won back-to-back team gold medals. Raisman was also awarded silver medals for individual all-around as well as the floor exercise. She is the third-highest accomplished American gymnast in Olympic history, just behind Shannon Miller and Simone Biles and has won six Olympic medals.Raisman was also a member of the gold-winning American teams at the 2011 and 2015 World Championships, and the bronze medalist from the world championships in floor exercise in 2011. She was also two times a national champion in floor exercises (2012 and 2015) as well as the 2012 national champion in balance beam. She also is the reigning national champion for five consecutive years in all-around at national championships (silver, bronze, 2010 2011, 2012 and 2015). In 2013, she was inducted into the International Jewish Sports Hall of Fame. Raisman was born on 25 May 1994 in Needham, Massachusetts to Lynn Faber (nee Faber), who was a former high-school gymnast, and Rick Raisman. There are three sisters younger than her: Madison, Chloe, and Brett. Raisman is Jewish, and has said, "I take a lot of pride in being able to not just represent the U.S.A but also the Jewish community all over the world. Raisman began gymnastics at the age of 18 months. She attributes her initial enthusiasm for the sport to the "Magnificent Seven", the gold medalists of the U.S. women's team at the 1996 Summer Olympics which she was able to watch on VHS.She was a student at Exxcel Gymnastics and Climbing through the level 8 stage, when she moved to Brestyan's American Gymnastics Club under coaches Mihai and Silvia Brestyan. Raisman was a graduate of Needham High School in 2012. She finished her senior year online while practicing for the Olympics.
